World Water Day, 2018 - Sustainable Irrigated Agriculture under Changing Climate

This year theme for World Water Day 2018 is “Nature for Water” which is important in the present context of anthropogenic activities and induced climate change. Agriculture is the biggest consumer of water and exploiter of nature. This sector cannot be condemned as it serves as the biggest sector providing employment and food to the people. However, sustainable approaches in irrigated agriculture can be adopted to preserve nature as well as the needs of human life, this was the theme of World Water Day 2018 organized on March 15 at Lahore by PCRWR in collaboration with other partner organizations (University of Canberra, CSIRO, PARC, SOFT).The Australian High Commissioner for Pakistan H.E. Margaret Adamson assured full support of Australian Government to Agriculture and Water Resources Management in Pakistan. She briefed that the Australian Water Program is a $A15 million assistance program comprising a large policy investment. Federal Secretary Ministry of Science and Technology Ms. Yasmeen Masood stressed on the need of disseminating new, cost effective and innovative solution to address water scarcity in Agriculture. Dr. Muhammad Ashraf, Chairman PCRWR apprised that PCRWR in collaboration with its knowledge partners is taking various initiatives to improve water productivity. Recent example is Irrigation Advisory to 20,000 farmers through text messaging. Member (Agriculture) Planning Commission of Pakistan, Dr. Muhammad Azeem also addressed the gathering. Dr. Sandra Mustafa from University of Canberra remarked that, all farmer learning techniques, technologies and innovations should incorporate social context of farmer life, only in this dream of financial wellbeing of farmers can be realized.
